Mission Madison Follow-Up
Jul 28th
From June 21-25, twenty-one Door Creek Church Middle School students (teaming up with a group from Lakeview Church in Stoughton), served God in the Madison community during their summer mission trip, Mission Madison. Students were challenged to personally experience God's love and share His love with those in our community through a variety of serving opportunities. Through doing this, students saw first-hand that they need not travel far in order to make a difference.
Upon reflecting on the week-long mission trip, Pastor Paul Peterson said it was "an amazing week of serving God and serving people. The impact that was made is immeasurable and we will never know the full extent of what took place that week because we were dealing with lives (our own and others), and those are impossible to measure."
Still, there are some tangible things that can be measured. Following are some general information and highlights from Mission Madison:
- Partnered with 6 food pantries or food distribution centers
- Bagged approximately 15,000 pounds of food to go to food pantries
- Served meals to approximately 250 people between State Street and the River Food Pantry
- Served a combined total of 1,200 hours committed to helping others
- Eyes were opened to the thousands of people in need in our own community
- Saw how simple it is for us to get involved and help, giving and sharing out of our abundance
- Able to do landscaping jobs to assist 3 elderly and disabled individuals who are unable to maintain their yard or have recently lost spouses
- Able to make financial donations to area food pantries that our churches partner with
The week of service ended with a dinner and presentation for parents. Parents were able to see pictures from the week's projects and activities, as well as hear from the students. Each group (divided by grade level), shared what they learned and experienced.
A few quotes from the students:
- "We learned that God provides strength even when we are tired." - 6th grade girls
- "There is joy in serving even when it's 'boring' or tedious. We'd sing songs and make it fun. We also learned about judgment and how we can't judge others based on what we see. " - 8th grade girls
- "It was cool to see the impact something so simple could have on people - and that it just takes us stepping out of our comfort zones..." - 7 grade boys
So whether bagging cereal, packaging peanuts, sorting clothes, weeding or laying down mulch, many students shared how they didn't realize how much need is out there and how easy it is to fill the needs.
